Yahrzeit Observance

There is an important Jewish custom to mark the yearly anniversary of the passing of a loved one. It is customary to light a memorial candle in your home on the evening of the Yahrzeit. If there is a memorial plaque in our sanctuary, the electric light will be lit. You can contact Mel Nagler at if you would like to inquire about a memorial plaque.  If you are able to, it is a beautiful tradition to come to Shabbat morning services on the Saturday before the Yahrzeit so you can say Kaddish in the memory of your loved one.  If you do attend, we will honor you with an Aliyah to the Torah. One may also sponsor the Shabbat Kiddush on that weekend in honor of the Yahrzeit.
It is also customary to give tzedakh (charity) around the time of the Yahrzeit. This can be in the form of a contribution to the synagogue or to any other worthy cause.
